Keck School To Host Institute of Medicine Meeting on Science, Ethics, Politics

The Keck School of Medicine has been selected to host the regional meeting of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science on Jan. 11, 2005 at 4 p.m.

The prestigious event, titled “Science, Policy, Ethics and Politics: AIDS and Stem Cells,” will feature Caltech president and Nobel laureate David Baltimore discussing AIDS policy, and Fred Gage, a genetics leader at the Salk Institute, speaking on stem cells. Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine, will offer welcoming remarks.

Linda Rosenstock, dean of the UCLA School of Public Health, will moderate.

The Institute of Medicine is the health-policy arm of the National Academy of Science and is committed to the advancement of health sciences and education and to the improvement of health care.

Several USC faculty are members of the Institute of Medicine, including Zach Hall, senior associate dean for faculty development at the Keck School, Brian Henderson, dean of the Keck School of Medicine and the Kenneth T. Norris Chair in Epidemiology, Barbara Korsch, professor of pediatrics, Malcolm Pike, professor of preventive medicine, former Keck School dean Stephen J. Ryan, professor of ophthalmology, president of the Doheny Eye Institute and official host of the event; former Keck School dean Robert Tranquada and William Schwartz, professor of medicine.

The presentations, which are open to the public, will be held in the Mayer Auditorium in the Keith Administration Building on the Health Sciences Campus and will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
